Joan Rivers’ Manhattan Penthouse for Sale for $38 Million
It previously sold for $28 million.
The late great Joan River’s spectacular Manhattan penthouse is on the market again. It sold seven years ago for $28 million to a certain anonymous member of a Middle Eastern royal family. Now it is being offered exclusively by Jenny Lenz and Dolly Lenz Real Estate for $38 million.
Joan Rivers lived in this beautiful penthouse on Manhattan’s East Side before she passed. The late comedienne quipped about her home in a documentary that, “This is how Marie Antoinette would have lived if she had money.”
Located at 1 East 62nd St. right near Fifth Ave, the home holds more than 5,000 square feet in space, the apartment has floor to ceiling windows, wood burning fireplaces, a parlor, a mezzanine floor and a second floor. There are two terraces with a total of 430 external square feet of space which offer of Central Park and the city.
It is decorated with candelabra like light fixtures on its walls, white decorative drapes and has hardwood floors. Support beams that separate the living areas are decorated to look like Greek columns and the spacious master bath has a standalone ornate tub.
The penthouse occupies the entire top three floors of the seven story, 42 foot wide, turn-of the 20th Century limestone mansion built in 1903 by millionaire John Drexel and his socialite wife Alice Troth Drexel in Lennox Hill near the corner of Fifth Ave. The home was converted into condominium apartments in the 1930s.
Ernest Hemingway once lived there and it is where he wrote The Snows of Kilimanjaro.
Rivers had come a long way from the simple Brooklyn apartment building in which she grew up. The star lived with her parents and older sister in apartment 107 at the 16 story Art Deco building 135 Eastern Parkway. Built in the 1920s, it stands opposite the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.
