Movie star Jake Gyllenhaal will appear in a new HBOmax limited series called “The Son.” The series is based on a Joe Nesbo’s bestselling book of the same name.
This will be Gyllenhaal’s first foray into television series acting. Jake is the brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and their mother is Jewish.
Jake Gyllenhaal will also produce the series through his Nine Stories production company.
Denis Villeneuve will direct and serve as an executive producer with Gyllenhaal. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy will also be producers and Lenore Zion will write the show.
“Jonah and Lisa are a formidable creative force and we are excited to collaborate with them again, alongside the brilliant Lenore, to adapt Jo Nesbø’s novel,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming.
“Denis is a master at weaving visually exquisite and unique narratives, Jake is a gifted actor and producer whose work often traverses provocative and compelling terrain, and of course, he and Denis have collaborated brilliantly in the past. We are beyond excited to see how this powerhouse team tackles this exceptional work.”
“The Son” was released in 2014 and is part of Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series of books.
It centers on Sonny Lofthus, a drug addicted policeman’s son who spent years in jail for other people’s crimes.

According to the entertainment website IMDB, Jake Gyllenhaal currently has at least seven other projects listed as being either under pre-production or simply “announced” right now.
These include “Snow Blind” about a high-school teenager who discovers that his family has secretly been in the Witness Protection Program for years and that someone is now tracking them down.
“The Anarchists vs ISIS,” about a group of American activists join forces with a Kurdish militia group to help defeat ISIS in Syria. And “The Guilty” in which a demoted police officer assigned to a call dispatch desk is conflicted when he receives an emergency phone call from a kidnapped woman.
