UK Ambassador to Iran Arrested in Tehran, Later Released

Britain’s Ambassador to Iran, Rob Macaire was arrested Saturday evening in Tehran. There are numerous rumors as to where and how he was arrested.

The Ambassador was held by Iranian authorities for at least two hours, some say longer, for reasons unknown. UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called the arrest “a flagrant violation of international law.”

According to the Iranian semi-official Tasnim News Agency, “Macaire was in a protest rally in front of the university in time of arrest. He is accused of involvement in provoking some radical acts among protesters.
He was freed a few hours later but will be summoned tomorrow for further explanations.”

An “informed source” told Tasnim that “a shop which is located in front of the Amir Kabir University has been used as the envoy’s place for coordination.”

A groundswell of grassroots protests has once again begun to rage across the country in reaction to the government’s admission that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Division did indeed shoot down a civilian Ukraine International Airlines passenger plane last Wednesday, killing all 176 people on board the flight. The IRGC claimed the missile fire was launched by mistake, due to “human error.”
