Being open source anyone can see its code; it’s open so nothing is hidden from users. As such users can add to it or change it in any way they wish. They can also program anything they like for use with an open source program without having to adhere to any company imposed limitations.

OpenOffice and Firefox are two examples of programs which re open sourced. Their users can do whatever they want with them without worrying about copyright infringements. And most importantly, open source means free. But it also means lack of secrecy and security, making it easier for hackers to break in to a system which relies on it.
