The Jewish-American billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam considered being close friends of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Adelson, also “Israel Today” publisher, did not spare his efforts to express his support for Netanyahu, both in his newspaper and other public statements. But Adelson’s testimony in case 2000 reveals the nature of the connection between the two couples.
Transcripts published by Channel 13 on Sunday from the couple’s questioning revel the burden demands placed on the Adelsons, including an order to employ Netanyahu’s close advisor, today the state eyewitness, editor-in-chief of Israel Today.
“Bibi wanted Nir Chafetz to replace Amos Regev, as editor-in-chief. She (Sara) would tell my wife that ‘if Iran were to attack [Israel], it would be on your head because we did not post good pictures of her.’”
On another occasion, Adelson described Sara Netanyahu’s temper and claimed that “she is completely crazy. She was compulsive to her pictures and how she looks. She said ‘I am the first lady. I am a psychologist and teach children about psychology’.”
Miriam Sheldon who was considered very close to the prime minister’s wife told police in her testimony of Sara Netanyahu’s influence on her husband’s attitude toward prominent figures in the political system: “It bothers me that there is such a prime minister who has a wife who determines everything. She tells him who to board and who not to board,” she said. “She hates Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked. I was furious after the previous election when he (Benjamin Netanyahu) did not make a coalition with Bennett because she (Sara Netanyahu) hates him. I mean, the fate of the Jewish people is doomed because the lady hates Bennett and Shaked, so he doesn’t make a coalition with the right man that fits.”
“From rumors I know she chooses employees,” she added. “Workers around him. The bureau, secretary and then she knows everything about what’s going on. Appointments in my opinion, too.”
Miriam Adelson did not spare her juicy details about Sara Netanyahu. “At dinner with us, she screamed so badly that Bibi told her to go. She screamed that I sucked her blood, it was terrible. She lost her temper. I hugged her and told her ‘Sarah, will be fine …’”
To the investigators, she added: “Bibi is smart, she [Sara] is just not healthy. As a doctor, I have compassion for unhealthy people. I treat addicts. She is not healthy.”
Adelson continued in her testimony, on another case, in which the prime minister’s wife asked her to donate to a good cause – but this fact, too, said Adelson, there was a covert interest.
Sara reportedly told her “There is some fund of Moroccan Jews and she wanted me to donate to them. She said it was nice to donate to scholarships for Moroccan children, and then she said one sentence I did not like. She said: ‘He (in charge of the scholarship) is helping us in the elections, Ashdod or something.’ “So we gave him the honor and we heard him but he didn’t get a single penny from us.”
In recent days, Prime Minister Yair Netanyahu’s son has frequently attacked the “Israel Today” newspaper.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said in response: “Another criminal leak that sentenced three years in prison. Except for the names mentioned, there is not one word of truth in your false report. The delusional who is based on false gossip and not facts, but does not understand what was spent two hundred and fifty million NIS in the prime minister’s investigations.”
