Greek Jews Protest Anti-Semitic Graffiti on Trikala Synagogue

The Central board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) on Tuesday issued a press release protesting the anti-Semitic graffiti that had been sprayed on Monday night on the restored synagogue in the city of Trikala. They stated that the act of vandalism has caused “outrage and deep sadness,” and that the line “Jewish snakes out” that was among the hate slogans on the synagogue’s wall reminded them “that the snake’s egg continues to hatch in our society, and that the fight against anti-Semitism must be continuous and its vigilance uninterrupted.”

An estimated 40 Jews live in Trikala.

The great Synagogue “Ka’hal Kadosh Yavani’im” on Athanasiou Diakou Street was torn down in 1930, and a new synagogue was constructed in its place, which the occupying Germans looted and turned into a stable. After the War it was repaired, but suffered serious damages in the 1954 earthquakes. Once again it was repaired and was inaugurated in 1957. Recently, the synagogue received a face-lift – which was now marred by the act of vandalism.

KIS insisted authorities must “take all necessary measures to arrest and punish the perpetrators and to protect the Jewish sites of the city of Trikala, which has demonstrated its zero tolerance of intolerance and racism.”

Back in October 2018, eight tombstones were destroyed at the Jewish cemetery of Trikala.
